RRI.CO.ID, Wonosobo - The Wonosobo Regency Administration in Central Java is elevating its tourism appeal by hosting its traditional hot air balloon festival across 23 different locations in nine districts. The week-long event, running from March 22 to 29, 2026, is a key highlight of the region's annual 2026 Mudik Festival.
Fahmi Hidayat, Head of the Wonosobo Tourism and Culture Office, noted that this year's scale marks a significant expansion.
“This number has increased significantly compared to previous years, which were only in the dozens of locations,” said Fahmi son Monday, March 23, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
The colorful, traditional balloons are a long-standing local custom. To honor the tradition without risking national airspace, all balloons are tethered to the ground in accordance with aviation authority regulations.
Fahmi highlighted this as a successful synergy between cultural preservation and public safety. “This is an example of how the community can synergize with the government. Besides preserving culture, this activity is also a prime tourist attraction for Wonosobo,” he explained.
By dispersing the festival across 23 rural and suburban sites, the local administration expressed its hope to decentralize tourism away from the heavily visited Dieng Plateau. Visitors are encouraged to explore hidden gems and rural villages set against the scenic backdrop of Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing.
The grand finale of the festival will culminate at the Wonosobo Town Square (Alun-alun). Driven by these cultural events, the regency has set an ambitious target to attract over three million visitors throughout 2026. ***
