RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The French spend an average of 9 to 12 hours a day sitting, according to data from the National Observatory of Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior (Onaps). Sedentary behavior, or the total time spent sitting without moving from waking up to bedtime, is a major risk factor for health.

To combat its negative effects, there's only one solution: move. But after an exhausting workday, you'd rather relax and unwind on the couch. A bad idea to regain energy, warns sports coach Lucile Woodward.

Interviewed on the show "Grand bien vous fasse" on France Inter, Lucile Woodward suggested a movement to do at home to awaken muscles and be in shape for the evening. The exercise is simple and quick, and can be done in just a few minutes.

The exercise involves doing squats and toe raises. Start in a standing position, feet flat, and slightly bend your knees. Then, stand up and rise on your toes. Don't forget to pull in your belly button to engage your core.

By repeating this exercise, you engage "calves, thighs, and abs," explains Lucile Woodward. This will give you "a shot of energy for the rest of the evening," according to her, even motivating you to continue with a longer workout.

Doing this daily squat series can be a first defense against sedentary behavior, which increases mortality risk. "From 7 to 8 hours a day sitting, the risk of death increases by 59% compared to those who sit less than 4 hours a day," Dr. Michel Cymès warned in a previous article.

To break with immobility, it's also recommended to stand up at least once an hour and contract leg muscles. This simple habit can help reduce the risks associated with sedentary behavior and improve overall health.
