RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Muslims living in Taiwan have become a major presence at local mosques during Ramadan, often leading community activities such as iftar gatherings, tarawih prayers, and preparations for Eid al-Fitr.
According to Arya Satya Rajanagara, an Indonesian student based in Taichung, Indonesians make up a large portion of the Muslim community attending mosques during the fasting month.
“There are many Indonesians in Taiwan, both workers in various sectors and students. So, during communal iftar, Indonesians dominate the mosques here, including the mosque in Taichung where I live,” Arya said in an interview with Radio Republic Indonesia on Monday, March 16, 2026.
He noted that Indonesian traditions are also reflected in the food served at mosque iftar events. Popular Indonesian snacks such as bakwan (a crispy vegetable fritter) and kolak (a sweet dessert made with coconut milk and palm sugar) are commonly prepared, though some dishes are adapted to local Taiwanese tastes.
Arya added that iftar meals at mosques are not only provided by Indonesians. Muslim communities from other countries also contribute by taking turns preparing food for the gatherings. “The mosque organizes the rotation for providing takjil, so the food varies and represents different countries,” he added.
As Eid al-Fitr approaches, the Indonesian community in Taichung has also begun preparing for the Eid prayer. Due to limited mosque capacity and the large number of worshippers, organizers plan to hold the prayer in three shifts.
“The first shift will start at 6 a.m., the second at 7 a.m., and the third at 8 a.m.,” Arya explained, adding that the imams and preachers for the Eid prayers will likely come from the Indonesian Muslim community residing in Taiwan.
Many Indonesians in Taiwan are also waiting for the official announcement of the Eid date, which Arya said is expected to fall around March 20 or 21, 2026, similar to the timing in Indonesia. (Diffa Sephiawardhani/Sri Wahyuni)
