RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The landscape of Indonesian cinema is undergoing a technological transformation as local filmmakers begin to master high-concept genres and sophisticated production tools. During an intimate screening of the film Pelangi di Mars (Rainbow in Mars) in Jakarta on Friday, March 13, 2026, Media Creativity Deputy at the Creative Economy Ministry, Agustini Rahayu, lauded the project as a bold milestone for the domestic industry.
She highlighted that the film serves as tangible proof of Indonesian filmmakers' courage to explore the science fiction genre, which has historically remained a rarity in the national film circuit.
"This shows that the Indonesian film industry is growing rapidly in terms of narrative and production technology. These advancements allow for the exploration of the science fiction genre, which has rarely been tackled in national cinema," said Agustini, as reported by Antara.
She further noted that the production is a pioneer in the country, being the first Indonesian film to utilize Extended Reality (XR) technology powered by the Unreal Engine. This advanced setup allows for the seamless integration of live-action performances with digital environments in real time.
The successful realization of the film is attributed to a robust synergy within the cinematic ecosystem. Rahayu expressed her appreciation for the collaboration between creators, production houses, and technology partners that enabled such an innovative output.
She observed that the industry is currently riding a wave of positive momentum, characterized by a growing number of national films reaching millions of viewers and dominating domestic box office charts.
"The Indonesian film industry is currently in a very good momentum. This trend is also evident from the increasing number of national films capable of reaching millions of viewers and dominating the list of best-selling films in the country," she added.
Beyond its technical achievements, Pelangi di Mars addresses the urgent global issue of environmental sustainability. This thematic focus is intended to resonate with the younger generation, who are increasingly concerned about the future of the planet.
To support this upward trajectory, the Creative Economy Ministry is actively strengthening the industrial framework by expanding market access, promotion, and distribution. Agustini emphasized that these steps are vital for opening doors to international collaborations.
Furthermore, the Ministry plans to support intellectual property financing schemes to ensure more sustainable funding sources for creative works, which will ultimately fortify the national film ecosystem.
"So that Indonesian films become increasingly popular and have a wider reach in both domestic and global markets," she said, regarding the government's support initiatives.
She expressed hope that the high standards set by Pelangi di Mars would inspire a new wave of Indonesian filmmakers to experiment with emerging technologies and diverse genres. By successfully producing a global-standard sci-fi film, local talent has signaled that Indonesia is ready to compete on the world stage. ***
