RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - In running, the term pace is often used as a benchmark to assess a runner's ability and rhythm. In Indonesia, the use of this term is becoming more widespread as more people take up running.
Many runners record their training results through fitness apps. They also share them on social media as a form of documentation and an expression of satisfaction with their achievements.
The popularity of pace is driven by its practicality and ease of understanding. Through pace information, for example, six minutes per kilometer, runners can determine their average speed without having to separately explain the distance and time achieved.
Furthermore, pace plays a role in helping runners maintain a steady rhythm. In middle to long-distance running, consistency in speed is considered more effective than starting at a high tempo, which risks causing fatigue before reaching the finish line.
In addition, the use of pace also facilitates interaction within the running community, as a number of training groups and running activities usually divide participants based on specific pace categories, so that beginner runners can adjust to their physical abilities.
In scientific studies, pace is also used as a measure of exercise intensity. A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health stated running pace refers to the speed that a runner covers a certain distance and used as an indicator of physical activity intensity.
Technically, pace is obtained by dividing the duration of the run by the distance covered. For example, if a runner completes a distance of five kilometers in thirty minutes, the pace achieved is six minutes per kilometer.
This calculation can be done simply or with the help of sports equipment and fitness applications that automatically display pace data during and after running activities.
As the trend of running increases in society, understanding pace becomes increasingly relevant. Pace does not only indicate speed, but also helps runners control their performance, maintain consistency in training, and develop strategies for competitions and routine training sessions.
Thus, pace can be seen as a common language among runners that bridges communication between individuals with different abilities. Regular monitoring of pace also allows runners to objectively track their performance progress.
Through a good understanding of the concept of pace, people are expected to be able to run in a more planned, safe, and sustainable manner.
