RRI.CO.ID, Surakarta - The Grebeg Sudiro festival returned to the Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro area in Surakarta, Central Java, on Sunday, February 15, 2026, as the centerpiece of various activities held to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
This annual event serves as a vital symbol of the long-standing cultural acculturation between the Javanese and Chinese residents of Sudiroprajan Village. By blending these two distinct heritages into a unified public celebration, the festival successfully highlights the city’s commitment to social harmony while attracting thousands of spectators to the historic market district.
Quoting Antara, the festival features a parade of basket cake mounds (gunungan kue keranjang), lion and dragon dances, and traditional Javanese arts that reflect the long-standing cultural blend in the city. Through its regular annual implementation, Grebeg Sudiro also functions as a cultural tourism agenda that encourages MSME participation and drives the local economy.
The celebration demonstrates that tradition can be a means of maintaining harmony while simultaneously strengthening the city's overall appeal. The festivities include various lanterns of different shapes and colors decorating the streets from City Hall to Pasar Gede, alongside cultural parades and lion dance performances.
Grebeg Sudiro is widely recognized as a symbol of the harmonious integration of Javanese and Chinese residents in the Sudiroprajan area of Solo. This parade has become a major attraction for Lunar New Year tourism in Solo, serving as a festival to welcome the arrival of the new year in Surakarta.
On Sunday afternoon, thousands of Solo residents crowded the Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro area to witness and participate in Grebeg Sudiro. The event has been officially included in the Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) as part of the primary series of tourism attractions in Indonesia.
The fusion of Chinese and Javanese cultures remains the distinct hallmark of Grebeg Sudiro according to official sources. In a statement on her Instagram account, Surakarta Deputy Mayor Astrid Widayani shared her thoughts on the significance of the event.
“The Cultural Parade as part of the Grebeg Sudiro tradition is held once again as a form of harmonious acculturation between Javanese and Chinese cultures,” she said.
She noted that this year’s celebration was more vibrant due to the enthusiasm of participants arriving from other cities and even from abroad. The Deputy Mayor emphasized that the festival is a meaningful celebration that fosters a spirit of brotherhood and reflects the harmony of Solo.
“It is a celebration to welcome the Lunar New Year that is full of meaning and values of brotherhood, symbolizing a harmonious city of Solo,” she added.
