KBRN, Yogyakarta: Travel trends among millennial and Gen Z travelers tended to change, leading them to flock to less explored and remote tourist attractions.
EaseMyTrip co-founder Rikant Pittie revealed that this trend was driven by the desire to have unique experiences that offer a deeper connection with the culture, nature, and people of a region, away from crowded public places, antaranews.com reported, quoting the Hindustan Times website.
“Sustainable tourism is certainly growing in demand, with more travelers opting for eco-friendly accommodation, choosing low-impact activities, and supporting local economies," said Rikant Pitti.
Pittie added that this shift reflected a broader awareness of tourism's environmental and social impacts and a commitment to preserving the destinations' natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Pittie explained that technology also played an important role in this transformation. The rise of AI-based travel planning tools, personalized recommendations, and virtual reality previews allowed travelers to easily discover and plan trips to lesser-known destinations.
The demand for seamless connectivity and convenience propelled innovation in travel apps and platforms. These apps made it easier for travelers to explore unfamiliar territories, access local services, and make the right decisions while traveling.
“Interest-based travel with the help of OTA (Online Travel Agents) is another growing trend, with travelers increasingly organizing their trips around specific interests, be it culinary experiences, art, adventure sports or wellness retreats,” Pittie said.
This customized approach to travel not only enriched the overall experience, but also opened up new destinations that cater specifically to these interests. This also called for affordable overseas travel insurance for convenience during the trip.
Niyo CEO and co-founder Vinay Bagri said that Indonesia, Vietnam, Georgia, the Philippines, and Malaysia were new travel destinations of the interest. These destinations were increasingly popular among Gen Z and Millennials, as marked by a 20 percent increase in spending in the 18-24 age group, driven by the growing popularity of unusual destinations.
This shift in interest was also influenced by the seasons in countries with four seasons. Southeast Asian countries saw an increase in popularity during winter and spring, while destinations such as Europe and Central Asia were more desirable during summer and fall, Vinay Bagri said.
Vinay Bagri also mentioned that the millennial generation continued to allocate a larger portion of spending in traditional destinations rather than in unconventional ones. Meanwhile, Gen Z was inclined to spend more on non-traditional destinations.
Indonesia offers many hidden tourist destinations, including Kei Island, Kakaban Island, Labuan Cermin Lake, Weh Island, Napabele Lake, Sipiso-Piso Waterfall, Mandeh Island, Alor Island, Tabuhan Island, and Teljuk Raung Waterfall, kumparan.com reported.
These unexplored natural attractions offer unique experiences and resources, such as white sandy beaches, clear water, and coral colors, as well as natural attractions and wildlife protection areas. These hiddengems have enormous values and potentials. ***
