Indonesia Launches Campaign for Non-Permanent UNSC Seat 2029–2030

RRI.CO.ID, New York - Indonesia has officially launched its campaign for election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2029–2030 term. The campaign was unveiled on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States on Friday, September 25, 2026.

Under the theme Fostering Unity, Advancing Peace, Indonesia’s candidacy reflects its commitment to bridging differences and strengthening efforts to realize peace, according to Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister, Sugiono.

As a candidate, Indonesia has put forward four key priorities, starting with enhancing the UNSC’s readiness to face an evolving security landscape and strengthening the peace continuum, spanning conflict prevention and mediation through peacekeeping and peacebuilding. It also focuses on expanding the participation of women and youth while deepening cooperation with regional and subregional organizations, alongside promoting a more effective, transparent, and inclusive Security Council.

“The world needs a Security Council that is able to listen and, more importantly, deliver concrete action. Indonesia will bring its experience, commitment to dialogue, and readiness to work with all parties amid differences.” said Minister Sugiono on Friday.

Minister Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia’s commitment to international peace and security is a constitutional mandate and the foundation of its free-and-active foreign policy. “Indonesia’s track record is reflected in the spirit of Bandung,” he said, invoking the 1955 Asian-African Conference that helped shape the Non-Aligned Movement.

He also highlighted Indonesia’s active role in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its status as one of the largest contributors of personnel to UN Peacekeeping Missions. Indonesia has previously served four terms as a non-permanent UNSC member in 1973–1974, 1995–1996, 2007–2008, and 2019–2020.

The campaign launch was attended by Saint Lucia Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre; Philippine Foreign Secretary, Theresa P. Lazaro; and Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister, Vivian Balakrishnan. Also present were Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister, Lasha Darsalia, and more than 130 representatives of UN member states, including Palestine. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
