Governor Pramono Highlights Jakarta’s Public Transport Network at U20 New York

RRI.CO.ID, New York – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung emphasized that Jakarta undergo a fundamental transformation of its public transport infrastructure. He stated that this step is being taken because Jakarta faces two major problems daily, namely traffic congestion and air pollution.

Pramono noted that Jakarta is home to approximately 11 million residents and serves as the center of a metropolitan area inhabited by more than 42 million people, according to United Nations data. During peak rush hours, around 4 million commuters travel in and out of the city from surrounding areas, largely relying on private vehicles.

Pramono delivered this statement before global governors and mayors during the Urban 20 (U20) Conference Afternoon Sessions in New York, United States, on Sunday, September 20, 2026. In his remarks, Governor Pramono explained that Jakarta's public transport system is now integrated with surrounding cities, ranging from train to bus.

“First, we are transforming the way people move across Jakarta. As a result, today, our integrated public transport network connecting MRT, LRT, TransJakarta, TransJabodetabek, and commuter rail covers 95% of Jakarta,” Pramono said.

Pramono explained that ongoing infrastructure expansion in Jakarta includes extending the MRT network from 15.7 kilometers to 46.5 kilometers by 2030, as well as expanding the LRT network to reach 75 kilometers by 2029.

Alongside network expansion, the city of Jakarta is also aggressively transitioning its vehicle fleet to be environmentally friendly. Jakarta currently operates around 5,000 buses, including 500 electric buses, with an explicit target for the entire fleet to be fully electric by 2029. This initiative aims to provide residents with a reliable and affordable alternative to private cars while actively reducing emissions.
