RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – September 15 is observed as the International Day of Democracy, serving as an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of democracy and public participation. Amid rapid social and technological changes, young people are among the groups that play an important role in shaping the future of democracy.

Young people’s contribution goes beyond participating as voters in elections, as they can also take part in various activities at schools, universities, communities, and society. Such involvement provides opportunities for young people to express their ideas and perspectives while contributing to solutions to issues in their surroundings.

As digital technology continues to develop rapidly, opportunities for young people to participate have also expanded. Social media, for example, allows them to express their views, follow public issues, and connect with communities both at home and abroad.

However, the ease of accessing and sharing information also presents challenges. The ability to verify sources, understand context, and distinguish reliable information from misleading content is increasingly important in democratic life in the digital era.

Beyond expressing opinions, democracy also requires the ability to respect differences. For young people, developing the habit of engaging in discussions and listening to different perspectives can help create a more open and inclusive public space.

Young people do not necessarily have to participate in formal politics to contribute to democracy. Involvement in social activities, organizations, education, environmental initiatives, and community programs can also be meaningful forms of participation.

The International Day of Democracy serves as a reminder that the sustainability of democracy requires participation from all parts of society, including young people. With knowledge, critical thinking, and a willingness to engage positively, young people can help build a society that is more open and responsive to change.
