RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every September 10 to raise global awareness of efforts to prevent suicide. More than 720,000 people die by suicide every year, with social, emotional, and economic consequences that also affect families, friends, workplaces, and communities around the world.
In 2026, the observance marks the third and final year of the 2024–2026 triennial theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” The theme carries the call to action “Start the Conversation,” encouraging people to discuss suicide more openly, compassionately, and without stigma.
Changing the narrative means challenging harmful myths and misunderstandings surrounding suicide. It also means moving away from silence and stigma toward openness, empathy, and support, creating environments where people feel more comfortable speaking up and seeking help.
The message places suicide prevention as a shared responsibility rather than the sole responsibility of health professionals or specific institutions. Individuals, families, communities, organizations, and governments all have a role to play in creating supportive environments for people experiencing difficult times.
Changing the narrative also involves systemic and policy-level action. Governments and institutions are encouraged to make suicide prevention and mental health a priority through evidence-based strategies and improved access to quality care and support.
World Suicide Prevention Day was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). Every September 10, the observance brings communities, organizations, and governments together around the shared belief that suicide is preventable.
Through the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” people around the world are encouraged to rethink how suicide is viewed and discussed. The call to “Start the Conversation” emphasizes that open and compassionate dialogue, supported by meaningful action, can contribute to a culture of greater understanding and suicide prevention.
