Illegal Adoption Case Highlights Urgency of Child Rights Protection

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The alleged trafficking of infants from West Java to Singapore through illegal adoption schemes has underscored the urgent need to strengthen child rights protection in Indonesia.

The Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) is ensuring that victims not only receive legal justice but also comprehensive care and support.

Deputy for Special Child Protection Titi Eko Rahayu said in Jakarta, Tuesday, September 8, 2026, that children must never be treated as commodities. “The best interests of the child must be the main priority, including fulfillment of rights and provision of services according to their needs,” she stressed, as quoted by Antara.

The case revealed systemic vulnerabilities: 18 children are already abroad, while the departure of seven infants to Singapore was successfully prevented. These children are now undergoing family reintegration or alternative care. Authorities continue to investigate the whereabouts of other children linked to the trafficking network.

So far, 19 perpetrators have been prosecuted, with convictions handed down on 21 July 2026. The syndicate allegedly recruited parents willing to surrender their babies, falsified documents, and arranged overseas transfers. PPPA Ministry praised law enforcement and local administrations for exposing the network.

Beyond prosecutions, PPPA is focusing on long-term protection, including identity tracing, family reintegration, and safeguarding children’s rights to grow in safe environments. The ministry also emphasized the importance of public education on legal adoption, family resilience, and accessible complaint mechanisms to prevent similar cases. ***
