Malaysia–Indonesia Ties Reinforced Through PM Anwar’s Message of Solidarity

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim used recent natural disasters in Indonesia as a moment to underscore the depth of bilateral ties, expressing sympathy and solidarity with the Indonesian government and people.

His remarks came amid volcanic eruptions and thick haze from widespread forest and land fires.

"I extend solidarity to our brothers and sisters in Indonesia following the volcanic disasters and haze challenges they are facing," PM Anwar stated in a post on his official social media account, as quoted by Antara.

He emphasized that Malaysia and Indonesia are more than neighbors, describing them as two nations bound by shared history, culture, and a strong sense of kinship.

“In shaa Allah (God willing), this bond will continue to be preserved for the welfare of both peoples and for peace and prosperity in the region,” he added.

PM Anwar conveyed his message of support during a phone call with Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who was in Penang, Malaysia, on 5–6 September to attend the Penang Peace Dialogue 2026.

The two leaders did not meet in person as Anwar was scheduled to attend the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture, and Agrotourism Exhibition (MAHA) 2026.

The solidarity message coincided with alarming data on Indonesia’s environmental crises. The Ministry of Forestry reported that forest and land fires had burned 107,465 hectares nationwide between January and June 2026.

The Indonesian National Police recorded 169 cases of forest fires from 1 January to 4 September, naming 113 suspects in ongoing investigations.

Several regions have also been hit by volcanic ash in recent weeks. The Center for Volcanology, Meteorology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) listed eruptions from Mount Ibu (North Maluku), Mt. Semeru (East Java), Mt. Lewotobi Laki‑Laki and Mt. Ili Lewotolok (East Nusa Tenggara), Mt. Anak Krakatau (Sunda Strait), and Mt. Sinabung (North Sumatra). ***
