RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy in Yangon has underscored its ongoing consular mission after facilitating the return of 12 Indonesian citizens (WNI) who received amnesty from Myanmar authorities.
The case reflects not only a successful repatriation but also the embassy’s broader role in safeguarding nationals caught in legal and administrative challenges abroad.
According to a statement released by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, 5 September 2026, the 12 individuals had served one year in prison for immigration violations and involvement in online scams.
Following the amnesty, the embassy completed administrative procedures, issued travel documents, and escorted the citizens back to Indonesia to ensure a smooth process, Antara reported.
Embassy staff had been assisting the group since gaining access to them in Hpa‑An, Kayin State, Myanmar in January 2026. Throughout the legal proceedings, the embassy monitored their condition, verified identities, and coordinated with both Myanmar authorities and Indonesian agencies.
Upon arrival in Indonesia, the 12 citizens were handed over to relevant institutions for further data collection and follow‑up measures.
The embassy also used the occasion to remind Indonesians to carefully verify the legality of overseas job offers and avoid involvement in online fraud networks, stressing that prevention is key to reducing legal risks. ***
