RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Japanese government has decided to deploy Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) helicopters to assist Indonesia in combating severe forest and land fires across Kalimantan.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Defense of Japan on Saturday, August 29, 2026, the international disaster relief support is being provided following an official request from the Indonesian government. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) will dispatch three CH-47 heavy-lift transport helicopters, which will be transported to Indonesia aboard the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force tank landing ship JS Kunisaki once final operational preparations are complete.

The emergency deployment follows a high-level virtual trilateral meeting on August 26, 2026, between Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles, and Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, where leaders pledged to bolster defense cooperation and regional disaster management capabilities across the Indo-Pacific.

Defense representatives highlighted that international humanitarian assistance reinforces regional stability and security cooperation between neighboring Indo-Pacific nations.

The Ministry of Defense of Japan detailed the scope of the emergency disaster response mission in an official press release.

"In response to the severe damage caused by forest fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia, and upon request from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, Japan has decided to support firefighting operations with JSDF helicopters, the JS Kunisaki will transport three JGSDF CH-47 helicopters to Indonesia as soon as all international disaster relief preparations are completed to support regional suppression efforts," the Ministry of Defense of Japan stated in an official release confirmed in Jakarta on Saturday, August 29, 2026. ***
