Indonesia Monitors Citizens After Nepal-Tibet Flash Floods

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), through the Indonesian Embassies in Dhaka and Beijing, continues to monitor the condition of Indonesian citizens (WNI) following flash floods that struck the Nepal-Tibet border area on August 26, 2026.

Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Heni Hamidah said preliminary information indicated that at least 90 people had died on both sides of the China-Nepal border, while hundreds of others remained missing.

"The Indonesian Embassies in Dhaka and Beijing continue to monitor the condition of Indonesian citizens by coordinating with Indonesian community networks and the Honorary Consul of Indonesia in Kathmandu," Heni said in an official statement on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

Heni said there had been no reports of Indonesian citizens being affected by the disaster so far. There are around 45 Indonesians in Nepal, most of whom live in Kathmandu and work in the hospitality sector.

Meanwhile, flash floods in the Nepal-China border region have caused fatalities and left hundreds of people missing.

The Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka is also paying particular attention to Indonesian citizens visiting Nepal as tourists, especially those taking part in trekking activities. To support monitoring and protection efforts, the embassy has urged travel agencies arranging trips for Indonesians to Nepal to immediately provide information on the whereabouts and condition of their clients, particularly those currently traveling or trekking.

"The Indonesian Embassies in Beijing and Dhaka urge all Indonesian citizens to remain vigilant, follow the instructions of local authorities, avoid affected areas, and monitor developments through official information sources," she said.

The Indonesian Embassies in Beijing and Dhaka will continue to monitor the situation and maintain communication with Indonesian communities.

The flash floods in Nepal occurred after the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa, a mountainous area of Nepal, suddenly overflowed. The powerful flow of water destroyed several houses and buildings, including a hydropower plant.

A similar disaster also occurred in Shigatse, Tibet. China's Xinhua News Agency reported that three people were killed and 265 others were missing following a mudslide in the area.

The overflowing river in China then flowed into Nepal, worsening the impact of the disaster along the border between the two countries.
