Indonesia Eyes Russian Technology to Enhance National Industry

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Russia is opening opportunities for technological cooperation with Indonesia by developing and localizing several technologies relevant to national industry needs, including drones, underwater robotics, autonomous emergency communication systems, and waste treatment technology.

These opportunities were discussed during a bilateral meeting between the Ministry of Industry and Russian Federation Senator, Ilyas Umakhanov in Jakarta, according to a press release on Monday, August 24, 2026.

During the meeting, cooperation focused on using technology to strengthen industrial capacity based on Indonesia’s needs. Key areas of mutual interest included telecommunications equipment, agrochemicals, industrial automation, waste treatment, and other technologies with the potential to be developed through partnerships between industry players in both countries.

Director General of Industrial Resilience, Regional Development, and International Access (KPAII) at the Ministry of Industry, Tri Supondy, stated that these cooperation opportunities need to be channeled effectively. The focus should be on partnerships that provide added value for the domestic industry.

“Cooperation between Indonesia and Russia needs to be focused on areas that yield tangible benefits for industry, whether through investment, technology transfer, or partnerships linking companies from both countries,” he said.

He added that the good relations between Indonesia and Russia need to be translated into more concrete economic cooperation. This includes exploring technologies that can be developed and localized to meet the needs of national industries.

“We see many opportunities to develop technological cooperation with Indonesia. Russia possesses drone technology for civilian use, underwater robotics suited to Indonesia’s characteristics as an archipelagic nation, self-sufficient communication systems for emergency situations, and waste treatment technology capable of producing resources beneficial to agriculture and livestock farming. We hope these technologies can be developed through joint cooperation and localization in Indonesia,” Senator Ilyas stated.

This offer will guide future discussions to make sure the technology fits national needs. The goal is to build local skills and production capacity, rather than just importing foreign products.
