RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and China strengthened political, security, and defense cooperation through a 2+2 meeting held in Jakarta on Friday, August 21, 2026. The meeting brought together Indonesian Foreign Minister, Sugiono; Indonesian Defense Minister, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin; Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi; and Chinese Defense Minister, Dong Jun.
On the occasion, Minister Sugiono said dialogue was essential to building trust and maintaining regional stability amid global dynamics. He said that through the 2+2 meeting, Indonesia and China continue to strengthen dialogue and cooperation to safeguard regional peace and prosperity.
“Our region needs partnerships founded on mutual respect and understanding. This is essential to keeping the region peaceful, open, and inclusive,” said Minister Sugiono during the meeting.
The two countries discussed strengthening political, security, and defense cooperation, including law enforcement and efforts to combat transnational crime. Cybersecurity cooperation was also highlighted through capacity-building, information-sharing, and technical dialogue between the two countries.
In the defense sector, Indonesia and China agreed to strengthen military-to-military mechanisms between the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Both sides also encouraged more frequent meetings between their defense ministries to enhance communication and defense cooperation.
Regarding the South China Sea, Indonesia and China supported the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC). The two countries also called for the completion of the ASEAN–China Code of Conduct (CoC), while continuing to uphold ASEAN centrality.
Indonesia and China also discussed strengthening ASEAN–China cooperation and the importance of maintaining stable relations among major powers. Indonesia said regional economic integration could help foster a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region.
On global issues, the two countries exchanged views on developments in the Middle East, including the situation in Palestine. Both sides stressed the importance of international efforts to advance a just and sustainable political solution for Palestine.
The 2+2 mechanism was first held in Beijing in April 2025. The latest meeting marked Indonesia’s turn to host.
The meeting complements the Indonesia–China cooperation framework across five strategic pillars, including security. The next 2+2 meeting will be held in China as part of the two countries’ ongoing strategic dialogue. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
