RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto welcomed the Thai Prime Minister (PM) Anutin Charnvirakul at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday, August 3, 2026. The two leaders discussed cooperation and agreements across various sectors, including defense, trade, and energy transition, as well as the revival of a bilateral forum that had not been held for 12 years.

PM Anutin arrived at Merdeka Palace on Monday afternoon after earlier landing at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta. In his opening remarks, President Prabowo welcomed Anutin's visit to Indonesia, considering the "historic " and "important" nature of the meeting as it is the first official visit by a Thai PM in 15 years, and stressed more frequent meetings between the two countries.

"It is the first official visit by a Thai Prime Minister to Indonesia in 15 years. Maybe because we are so close and we have no real problems, we take things for granted, and we think that 'oh, it’s just yesterday', but I think maybe we should meet more often and coordinate," Prabowo said, as quoted from the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat.

Prabowo was confident that the meeting would set a clear direction for the next phase of Indonesia-Thailand partnership. He opined that the partnership should be "forward-looking" and "focus on delivering tangible benefits" to both nations.

"If Thailand and Indonesia cooperate very closely, this can contribute to a stronger and stable ASEAN," he said.

On the occasion, Prabowo conveyed the "deepest condolences" on behalf of Indonesia and himself to the Thai royal family and its people on the passing of Princess Bajrakitiyabha on June 11. At the same time, he extended greetings to King Vajiralongkorn on his birthday on July 28, wishing for his good health, happiness, and strength in leading the kingdom.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed several agreements, including Thailand's procurement of 36 amphibious wheeled armored vehicles for the Indonesian Marine Corps. Anutin said that Thailand’s National Security Council will participate in a third security dialogue, which Indonesia will host next month.

Anutin also said that Thailand is committed to being a reliable supplier of food security, one of which is by supplying its high-quality rice to Indonesia. He also sought Indonesia's support to increase imports of Thai meat and dairy products, as well as machinery.

"On fertilizer, in return, we would like to import more urea fertilizer from your country as well... We can increase from the current volume of approximately 60,000 tons a year to 100,000 tons a year," he said.

In addition, Anutin announced that Thailand and Indonesia would resume the Thailand-Indonesia Energy Forum. It was last held in 2014 in Thailand's capital, Bangkok.

"It was 12 years ago in Bangkok. So, we should resume that meeting again to increase energy cooperation covering natural gas, coal, and future energy sources," he said.

On the occasion, Anutin presented a decoration from the Special Warfare Command of the Royal Thai Armed Forces to President Prabowo. Prabowo accepted the honor, describing it as a reflection of the trust, friendship, and close ties between the two countries, while adding that it was "beyond expectations".

Prabowo had previously visited Thailand in 2025, where he met King Vajiralongkorn and PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra. However, the last Thai PM to visit Indonesia was Paetongtarn's aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, in 2011.
