Indonesia and Thailand Agree to Build up ASEAN's Role for Myanmar's Peace

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Thailand agreed to strengthen ASEAN's role in promoting sustainable peace in Myanmar thru the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC). President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul conveyed the agreement during a bilateral meeting at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, August 3, 2026.

President Prabowo Subianto, stated that Indonesia and Thailand share the same view that the political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar must be resolved immediately. Therefore, both countries will continue to work together to encourage ASEAN to take a constructive role in supporting the creation of peace in Myanmar.

"Indonesia and Thailand will continue to work together to encourage ASEAN to play a constructive role in supporting the creation of sustainable peace in Myanmar," Prabowo said at a joint press conference.

In addition, Indonesia and Thailand also expressed support for the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus as the main framework of ASEAN in resolving the Myanmar crisis. Both countries believe that the implementation of the consensus should be carried out thru inclusive dialog, cessation of violence, and increased humanitarian access for affected communities.

"We agree to support ASEAN's efforts to promote the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus thru inclusive dialog, cessation of violence, and increased humanitarian access," he said.

In the same meeting, both leaders also discussed the developments in the Middle East situation. Prabowo said that Indonesia and Thailand believe that resolving conflicts in the region should be pursued thru dialog, diplomacy, and respect for international law.

Until now, ASEAN continues to promote the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus as an effort to resolve the crisis in Myanmar. The consensus includes the cessation of violence, inclusive dialog, the appointment of an ASEAN special envoy, the provision of humanitarian assistance, and the visit of a special envoy to Myanmar.

The bilateral meeting between Indonesia and Thailand resulted in an agreement for both countries to continue strengthening coordination in promoting ASEAN's role as part of efforts to resolve the Myanmar crisis thru dialog and diplomacy.
