RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed his deepest condolences over the deadly fire aboard the KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry in the waters off Sumenep, East Java, underscoring Thailand's solidarity with Indonesia during a bilateral meeting in Jakarta.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace on Monday, August 3, 2026, PM Anutin said the thoughts and prayers of the Thai people are with the victims and their families.
"Allow me to begin this meeting by expressing, on behalf of the people of Thailand, our deepest condolences for the ferry fire tragedy in Indonesia yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families," PM Anutin said.
He expressed hope that no additional lives would be lost and said he had been informed by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto that the emergency response was under control.
"I hope there will be no further casualties. I also heard good news from Minister Hartarto that the situation has been successfully brought under control," he added.
PM Anutin also thanked Indonesia for its condolences following the passing of Thai Princess Bajrakitiyabha, while expressing appreciation for President Prabowo's previous state visit to Thailand.
He specifically recalled the military honors Prabowo paid to King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, saying the gesture left a lasting impression on the Thai people.
"The entire Thai people smiled when they saw that tribute because it truly reflected the warm relationship between our two countries," he explained. The Thai leader further called for stronger Indonesia-Thailand cooperation to advance shared regional development.
"As two key pillars of ASEAN, we need to work more closely together to expand bilateral cooperation while promoting progress across our region," he continued.
Earlier in the meeting, President Prabowo conveyed Indonesia's condolences over the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha on behalf of the Indonesian government, people, and himself personally.
"Our prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time," President Prabowo said.
The Indonesian president also extended birthday wishes to King Maha Vajiralongkorn, expressing hope that the monarch would continue to enjoy good health, happiness, and strength in leading the Kingdom of Thailand. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
