RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia strengthened its cultural diplomacy in Japan as the Embassy in Tokyo supported the 48th Geinoh Yamashirogumi Kecak Festival, held in Shinjuku from July 29 to August 2, 2026.

The event, initiated by the Japanese arts collective Geinoh Yamashirogumi, featured traditional Balinese music such as jegog and gamelan, alongside dances including Legong and Kecak, performed by more than 100 artists.

Indonesian Ambassador to Japan Nurmala Kartini P. Sjahrir emphasized the festival’s role in fostering harmony and deeper collaboration between the two nations.

“We are ready to support every initiative. May this festival continue as a symbol of cultural unity and inspire closer cooperation,” she said, as quoted by Antara.

She praised the organizers for their commitment to showcasing Indonesia’s rich performing arts to Japanese audiences, noting the group’s long‑standing contribution to strengthening bilateral friendship through culture.

This year’s edition was particularly special, bringing together Indonesian performers--especially from Bali--with artists from Japan, Georgia, and Bulgaria.

Accompanied by the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo's cultural affairs coordinator Muhammad Al Aula, Ambassador Nurmala attended the festival on July 30 alongside more than 500 spectators.

Geinoh Yamashirogumi Executive Director Akira Yajima expressed optimism that the festival will continue to serve as a vital platform for cultural exchange.

“For half a century since its launch in 1976, this festival has been dedicated to bringing Indonesia’s rich performing arts to Japanese audiences,” he said, highlighting the collective rhythm and choreography that define the event. ***
