RRI.CO.ID, New York - Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Syahrul Aidi Maazat, emphasized its commitment to strengthening the role of parliament in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). This commitment was conveyed by the Indonesian delegation at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2026 at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, United States, some time ago.

Syahrul said achieving SDG 11 requires parliamentary support through legislative, budgeting, and oversight functions. This is to ensure sustainable urban development, expand public access to decent and affordable housing, and strengthen city resilience to climate change.

"The DPR views the comprehensive implementation of SDG 11 as crucial to ensuring that all citizens have access to safe and affordable housing, an integrated public transportation system, and a resilient and sustainable urban environment," he said, as quoted by dpr.go.id on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Syahrul further explained that increasing urbanization has become a driver of Indonesia's economic growth. The percentage of the urban population rose from 48 percent in 1990 to 58.8 percent in 2025. However, this situation also presents challenges in housing provision, infrastructure development, and environmental management.

He added that Indonesia continues to show progress in achieving the 2030 Agenda. By 2025, 62.7 percent of SDGs indicators had been achieved, and Indonesia also rose 25 places to 77th out of 167 countries in SDG achievement compared to 2019.

However, he cautioned that global achievement of the SDGs remains off track, with only around 16 percent of the targets expected to be achieved on time. Geopolitical tensions, funding gaps for developing countries, and unequal access to digital and green technologies are key challenges.

Therefore, Syahrul encouraged parliaments worldwide to optimize their legislative, budgeting, and oversight functions to ensure national policies align with the SDGs. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation through the HLPF as a forum for building inclusive global partnerships.

"The success of the 2030 Agenda requires the collective commitment of all countries. Parliaments have a strategic responsibility to ensure that no group of people is left behind in the sustainable development process," he said.
