RRI.CO.ID, Lima - Indonesia and Peru have agreed to strengthen their bilateral partnership as a bridge between Southeast Asia and South America by accelerating economic cooperation, trade, and investment.

The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting between Indonesian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Nasir and Peru's Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Eric Anderson Machado in Lima, Peru, on Sunday, July 27, 2026.

According to a statement issued by Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and received in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, Arrmanatha described Peru as a strategic gateway for Indonesia to enter the South American market, thanks to its Pacific coastline and expanding trade network. In return, Indonesia offers Peru access to the ASEAN market, home to more than 700 million people.

The two vice ministers agreed that bilateral relations are enjoying positive momentum, marked by the Indonesian President's visit to Peru for the 2024 APEC Summit and the Peruvian President's state visit to Indonesia in 2025, which resulted in the signing of the Trade in Goods Chapter of the Indonesia–Peru Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IP-CEPA).

Over the past five years, trade between the two countries has grown by an average of 5.5 percent annually, surging by 18 percent in 2025. Both countries therefore committed to accelerating the ratification of the Trade in Goods Chapter of the IP-CEPA while continuing negotiations on the Trade in Services and Investment Chapters to establish a comprehensive economic partnership.

Beyond economic cooperation, Indonesia and Peru agreed to expand collaboration in agriculture, maritime affairs and fisheries, culture, and international development. The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting each other at the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral forums.

As a follow-up, Indonesia and Peru agreed to hold the 7th Bilateral Consultation Forum in Indonesia in 2027 to review the progress of their cooperation and formulate the next phase of their partnership.

During the meeting, Arrmanatha also reiterated Indonesia's expectation that the legal process concerning the shooting of a junior diplomat at the Indonesian Embassy in Lima in September 2025 be concluded promptly and thoroughly. The Peruvian government reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing the investigation and strengthening security for all Indonesian Embassy personnel in Lima.

Arrmanatha Nasir's working visit to Peru was undertaken in his capacity as the Special Envoy of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to attend the inauguration of Peru's President-elect on July 27–28, 2026.
