RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, Vice President of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC) and Bishop of Kalookan, Philippines, emphasized that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) should be a means to strengthen human dignity, not replace it. This statement was delivered at the Cathedral Church in Jakarta on Sunday, July 26, 2026, during the 12th Plenary Session of the FABC 2026.
Cardinal Pablo explained that the Church was referring to Pope Leo XIV's latest encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, which emphasizes the importance of preserving human dignity amid the digital revolution. He stated that AI is fundamentally neutral and its moral value is determined by how humans use it.
He stated that this technology can bring broad benefits, such as supporting healthcare services, accelerating data processing, and facilitating cross-language communication. However, AI also risks being misused to spread disinformation, propaganda, and various forms of digital fraud.
He added that the Church does not view AI as a threat, but rather as a technology that needs to be used wisely for the well-being of humanity. "Therefore, the most important question is not how advanced AI is, but whether the technology makes us more human," Cardinal Pablo said.
He cited the example that human creativity cannot be completely replaced by machines, just as batik creations are born from experience, sensitivity, and culture. "AI was created to help humans, not to be feared," he said.
Although AI can accelerate tasks ranging from data analysis to language translation, he emphasized that such technology does not have a conscience. "Spiritual reflection, sermons, wisdom for life, and even human relationships must still arise from the heart and human experience," he stressed.
He also emphasized the importance of equipping the younger generation with the ability to discern information amidst the rapid flow of digital technology. In line with the spirit of the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, the FABC believes that technological progress must always be directed towards preserving human dignity and helping the younger generation grow into increasingly human individuals.
