RRI.CO.ID, Batam — Indonesia and Singapore officially inaugurated the landing of the Nongsa–Changi Submarine Cable System in Batam, Riau Islands, on Monday, July 20, 2026. This initiative aims to strengthen cross-border digital connectivity while unlocking global technology investment opportunities in Southeast Asia.

This new infrastructure serves as the physical foundation of a digital corridor connecting the two neighboring countries. The collaboration was initiated by Telin in partnership with BW Digital to support the rapidly accelerating growth of the digital economy.

The project provides an additional capacity of more than 1.6 petabits per second with extremely low latency—less than 2 milliseconds. This speed makes it one of the fastest and shortest digital connections in the region.

This capacity is designed to support various strategic digital services, such as advanced cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) inference. Additionally, the network facilitates high-frequency financial transactions and the development of next-generation digital services.

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, highlighted the importance of launching this connectivity infrastructure, emphasizing the project’s strategic role.

“Today we are celebrating the landing of the Nongsa–Changi Submarine Cable System. This infrastructure serves as the physical foundation for a new digital corridor, strengthening one of the fastest and closest digital connections in Southeast Asia between Indonesia and Singapore. The system, developed by Telin in collaboration with BW Digital, will provide additional capacity of more than 1.6 petabits per second with a latency of less than 2 milliseconds between our two countries,” he said.

This infrastructure development aligns with the vast scale of Indonesia’s internet market, which reaches 235.26 million users. This figure represents a penetration rate of 81.72 percent, alongside 99.5 million fixed broadband subscribers.

Indonesia is currently the fourth-largest potential AI market in Asia after China, India, and Japan. The domestic AI market value is estimated at USD 70 billion, representing approximately 6.4 percent of the total Asian AI market.

BW Digital’s NDP1 facility at Nongsa Digital Park now has an IT capacity of 120 MW. Meanwhile, DayOne, in partnership with INA, is developing a new hyperscale campus with a contracted power supply scaling up to 450 MW, while Oracle has selected Batam as its Indonesia North Cloud Region.
