RRI.CO.ID, Shanghai – Indonesia invited Chinese green energy companies to invest heavily in its massive renewable energy transition program. The Southeast Asian nation aims to build up to 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar power capacity.
The open invitation was extended by Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, during a bilateral meeting in Shanghai, China, on Friday, July 17, 2026. The move aligns with Indonesia's national goals to slash carbon emissions and shift away from fossil fuels.
Indonesia highly appreciates China's current involvement in the local green energy sector. A prime example is China's investment in the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant, one of the largest in the region.
This project proves that both nations possess great potential to collaborate on a clean energy transition, while demonstrating a shared commitment to global climate goals.
Minister Airlangga stated that the existing solar panel industry in Indonesia still has significant room for expansion. The government aims to build a complete and integrated solar supply chain within the country.
By creating a local supply chain, Indonesia can produce its own solar technology while lowering costs. This strategy is also expected to open up new green jobs for the domestic workforce.
“The Indonesian government is committed to maintaining policy certainty and creating a conducive investment climate. We hope this meeting will lead to concrete cooperation and projects that are mutually beneficial for both countries,” Minister Airlangga said.
To support these large-scale projects, Indonesia is involving its new financial institution, Danantara Indonesia. Danantara is expected to act as a strategic partner for international investors.
This collaboration will help fund priority projects alongside Chinese green energy giants, aiming to strengthen supply chains and bring modern technology into the Indonesian market.
Ultimately, this green partnership will help create a more balanced and sustainable bilateral trade relationship. Both countries hope to lead the clean energy shift in Southeast Asia.
