RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Efforts to strengthen military ties between the Indonesian Marine Corps and the U.S. Marine Corps took center stage during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 exercise in Hawaii, where senior Indonesian naval officers joined the Distinguished Visitors Day program on Friday, July 17.
Major General Oni Junianto, Commander of Marine Corps Pasmar 2, attended alongside Rear Admiral Mochammad Riza, Deputy Assistant for Naval Operations, and Colonel Rio Henrymuko, Head of the Navy’s Command and Control Center.
The delegation was formally received by U.S. Deputy Commander Major General Matthew T. Mowery, Antara reported.
Discussions between the two sides focused on amphibious operations and broader defense cooperation. The Indonesian officers also observed their Marines who have been participating in RIMPAC since late June.
The visit included a tour of the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD-2), where Indonesian officials were briefed on the vessel’s operational capabilities and combat readiness.
Oni Junianto expressed hope that such exchanges would further strengthen Indonesia’s defense relations with the United States and other partner nations.
RIMPAC, the world’s largest multilateral maritime exercise, involves 31 countries and approximately 30,000 personnel, along with 28 warships, five submarines, 30 combat aircraft, and 20 land force units.
Running from June 24 to July 31 in Hawaii, the exercise aims to enhance interoperability, professionalism, and maritime defense cooperation in addressing regional and global security challenges. ***
