Indonesian Badminton Team Arrives in Tokyo for Japan Open 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Tokyo – The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo welcomed the arrival of the Indonesian badminton team at Haneda Airport, Tokyo, on Sunday, July 12, 2026, ahead of the Japan Open 2026. The delegation of 27 athletes, coaches, and officials was received by Zharifah Raihanah Shiddiq, Third Secretary for Information, Social and Cultural Affairs at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo.
The team will compete in the BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament, which is scheduled to take place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium from July 14 to 19, 2026.
Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, said that sports play an important role in diplomacy and expressed hope that the Indonesian athletes would achieve their best results at the tournament.
“I am confident that our athletes are capable of delivering their best performances at the Japan Open 2026. I believe Team Indonesia has what it takes to secure victories. However, just as important as winning is demonstrating sportsmanship throughout the competition,” Nurmala said in a statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo received in Jakarta on Monday, July 13, 2026.
She added that the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo is fully committed to supporting the national team throughout the tournament. According to her, Indonesian citizens living in Japan, particularly in Tokyo and its surrounding areas, are also expected to show their support by attending the matches at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
Meanwhile, men’s doubles player Fajar Alfian expressed his appreciation for the support from the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Indonesian community in Japan. He said the team’s preparations for the Japan Open 2026 had been underway since the Indonesia Open 2026 and expressed optimism about delivering an even stronger performance alongside his partner, Muhammad Shohibul Fikri.
Fajar also encouraged Indonesians across Japan to attend the matches and cheer on Team Indonesia, saying their support would provide an extra boost of motivation.
Indonesia will compete in all five disciplines at the Japan Open 2026: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The Indonesian squad includes Jonatan Christie, Alwi Farhan, Putri Kusuma Wardani, Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, and mixed doubles pair Amri Syahnawi/Nita Violina Marwah, among others.
