RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi held high-level talks on volatile regional and global dynamics during a strategic bilateral meeting on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

The meeting took place in Mashhad, eastern Iran, on the sidelines of Indonesia’s official delegation's visit to attend the state funeral and pay final respects to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

“The two ministers exchanged views on regional and global developments and underscored the importance of resolving conflicts through dialogue, diplomacy, respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international law,” the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday, as quoted by Antara.

Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties by advancing concrete cooperation frameworks across priority sectors. Minister Sugiono also urged the optimization of existing mechanisms to accelerate the implementation of joint economic and social agreements that deliver tangible benefits to citizens of both nations.

Indonesia’s delegation to Iran reflected broad institutional representation.

Minister Sugiono was accompanied by People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani and senior representatives from the country’s two largest Islamic mass organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) and Muhammadiyah.

The inclusion of major political and religious leaders highlighted Indonesia’s calibrated diplomatic mission, aimed at expressing solidarity, promoting peace, and honoring the Iranian people during a period of historic transition.

In addition to the ministerial dialogue, the Indonesian delegation met with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Discussions focused on intensifying inter-parliamentary exchanges and strengthening people-to-people ties to reinforce diplomatic cooperation.

The state processions concluded at the Imam Reza Shrine complex in Mashhad, where the Iranian government formally invited Jakarta’s representatives to pay their final respects.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Indonesia’s delegation held a position of distinct diplomatic honor, arriving as the first foreign official delegation permitted to pay respects directly at the tomb of the late Supreme Leader.

The high-level visit underscored the historic friendship between Indonesia and Iran, while reaffirming Jakarta’s consistent commitment to a “free and active” (bebas-aktif) foreign policy that champions global stability, dialogue, and international cooperation. ***
