Parliament Approves Defense Cooperation Bill with Türkiye and Malaysia

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR RI) has approved further deliberations on two bills to ratify the country's defense cooperation agreements with Türkiye and Malaysia. The approval is part of the "level-one discussion" before the two bills are brought to the House's Plenary Session.
Chairman of the House's Commission I, Utut Adianto, stated that the two ratification bills is expected to strengthen the legal basis for implementing defense cooperation between Indonesia and the two countries. Therefore, their implementation can run more optimally.
"The ratification has gone smoothly. Hopefully, with this ratification, the programs can run more smoothly based on the strength of the law," Utut conveyed while leading a working meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
In the meeting, party faction leaders signed an agreement document, then Utut knocked the gavel as a sign of approval from Commission I to continue the discussion to the next stage. The meeting leader then asked all factions to submit their views to them before the two bills are submitted for approval in the plenary session.
Representing the Indonesian government, Vice Minister of Defense, Donny Ermawan Taufanto appreciated the approval. He affirmed that the government is ready to participate in the next stages of deliberations with the House.
"Next, we will follow up on the discussion of the problem list for the bill in question at the working committee meeting," he said.
The ratification of these two bills is expected to further enhance Indonesia's defense cooperation with Turkey and Malaysia through a legal framework. They are expected to provide certainty in the implementation of various programs and forms of strategic cooperation in the defense sector.
