RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received a delegation from Imperial College London at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday to discuss strategic cooperation aimed at improving the quality of higher education in Indonesia, particularly in the fields of medicine and science.

The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto said the partnership with Imperial College London forms part of the government's efforts to strengthen the national education and research ecosystem.

"With Imperial College, we have discussed many aspects of our plan to establish a strategic partnership to improve the level of education in Indonesia, particularly medical education," Brian Yuliarto said after accompanying President Prabowo at the meeting on Monday, 22 June 2026.

Brian explained that President Prabowo also discussed plans to build 10 medical and science universities in Indonesia, which will receive support from Imperial College London. According to him, the support will include curriculum development, preparation of teaching standards, joint research programs, and the involvement of international visiting professors.

"We also discussed the President's plan to establish 10 medical and science universities. They will receive substantial support from Imperial College. Curriculum development, preparation of teaching standards, joint research, and the involvement of visiting professors will be carried out in collaboration with Imperial College and other universities," he said.

He considered the collaboration with Imperial College London a strategic step to enhance the standards of higher education in Indonesia, in line with the government's commitment to strengthening human resources through education and research.

Brian said the meeting represented an important achievement, considering that Imperial College London is ranked second in the world in the QS World University Rankings, behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). "The fact that Imperial College was hosted by the President today is a very positive achievement. As we know, the latest QS Rankings have placed Imperial College second in the world, just below MIT," he said.

According to Brian, the benefits of the partnership are expected to extend beyond the 10 medical and science universities to be established, reaching other higher education institutions across Indonesia as well. "We are confident that the impact will also be felt by other universities throughout Indonesia. Therefore, we hope this visit will open the door to broader strategic cooperation in Indonesia's education sector," he said.

He added that Imperial College London's fourth-place global ranking in medical education presents a major opportunity for Indonesia to improve the quality of teaching and research. "We also know that Imperial College is ranked fourth in the world for medical education. If this collaboration can be realized, it will provide a significant opportunity for Indonesia to work directly with one of the world's leading universities to enhance the quality of teaching and research in the country," Brian Yuliarto said.
