RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Moroccan Ambassador to Indonesia, Redouane Houssaini, said Indonesia and Morocco have significant potential to enhance economic cooperation by leveraging their strategic positions as gateways to broader regions. Houssaini said Indonesia is an influential country in Southeast Asia through ASEAN, while Morocco serves as a bridge to Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

According to him, Morocco has nearly 1,500 agreements with African countries, including trade agreements, and is part of Africa's largest free trade area, covering a market of around 1.4 billion people.

"This means a lot for Indonesia. Indonesia has economic potential, natural resources, and capabilities in manufacturing and downstream industries, which are very important," Houssaini told Voice of Indonesia in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

He believes the two countries have considerable opportunities to expand economic cooperation, even though bilateral trade currently stands at less than 300 million U.S. dollars. He said one of the goals he hopes to achieve during his tenure in Indonesia is to increase bilateral trade to 800 million U.S. dollars.

"So my objective is to try to get 800 million USD after the end of my term here," he said.

To achieve this target, Houssaini emphasized the importance of strengthening business-to-business contacts and encouraging investment from both sides. "We have to promote business-to-business contacts. We have to encourage investment from each side," he said.

According to him, Indonesia can use Morocco as a platform to expand its access to African markets, while Morocco can utilize Indonesia to reach ASEAN countries.

Houssaini said he has been coordinating with various institutions and ministries, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, to promote deeper economic cooperation between the two countries.
