RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Germany have agreed to strengthen workforce cooperation through a new Global Skills Partnership, creating opportunities for Indonesian professionals to work in Europe while supporting long-term human resource development.

The agreement was formalized through a Letter of Intent (LoI) on nursing cooperation during German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s official visit to Indonesia.

Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection (P2MI) Minister Mukhtarudin accompanied President Prabowo Subianto during the bilateral talks at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday, June 15.

Minister Mukhtarudin described the agreement as an important milestone for expanding formal employment opportunities for Indonesian migrant workers in Europe, particularly in the healthcare sector.

Under the partnership, Indonesian nurses will receive internationally recognized training before deployment, enabling them to meet Germany’s professional standards and compete in one of Europe’s most demanding labor markets.

“This is a concrete step to ensure our nursing professionals gain broader international career opportunities while working through safe, legal, transparent, and high-quality channels,” Minister Mukhtarudin said on Wednesday, June 17, as quoted on the ministry's official website.

Beyond healthcare, Indonesia and Germany also agreed to explore cooperation in future-oriented industries, including high technology, digitalization, and green sectors. Both countries plan to develop upskilling and reskilling programs designed to align Indonesian workers’ competencies with global industry demands.

The initiative is expected to facilitate knowledge transfer and strengthen Indonesia’s workforce capacity as participants bring international experience and expertise back home.

President Prabowo welcomed the nursing partnership and highlighted Indonesia’s potential to supply skilled healthcare professionals to the global market. “We highly appreciate the signing of the Letter of Intent on the Global Skills Partnership in nursing,” Presiden Prabowo said.

The President also encouraged Germany to expand cooperation into high-tech industries and other specialized sectors that can provide future career opportunities for Indonesia’s younger generation.

According to the minister, the partnership is designed not only to meet Germany’s labor needs but also to serve as a long-term investment in Indonesia’s human capital development.

The Indonesian government said it remains committed to providing language training, technical skills development, and worker protection programs while encouraging prospective migrant workers to pursue overseas careers through official and legal channels.

Officials expect the agreement to strengthen Indonesia’s position as a source of globally competitive talent while contributing to domestic economic and industrial development through innovation and skills transfer. ***
