RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The state visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Jakarta has been hailed by President Prabowo Subianto as a pivotal moment in strengthening ties between the two nations.

Speaking at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta, on Monday, June 15, 2026, President Prabowo emphasized that the visit reflects the depth of Indonesia-Germany relations at a time when the world faces mounting instability.

“This visit is an important momentum in the midst of global dynamics that are increasingly full of uncertainty. Strengthening and sustaining the Indonesia-Germany partnership is certainly a priority,” he said, as quoted by Antara.

The meeting also marked the beginning of preparations for the 75th anniversary of bilateral relations in 2027, with discussions covering cooperation in economy, investment, energy transition, energy security, education, and employment. President Prabowo stressed that the milestone would serve as a reaffirmation of shared commitments.

President Steinmeier underscored the importance of the partnership as the global community grapples with conflicts in Europe, Central Asia, and Sudan.

“In situations like this, a partnership such as between Germany and Indonesia is very meaningful. It is a partnership between two countries committed to the rule of law, and that is the bond between us,” he remarked.

He recalled the Jakarta Declaration of 2012, signed by then-President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Chancellor Angela Merkel, which laid the foundation for cooperation in defense, economy, health, research, and technology.

“I am convinced we must deepen this partnership further, including in climate, education, research, and culture,” President Steinmeier added.

During the visit, President Steinmeier also reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to working with Indonesia in upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter as a response to rising global violence and conflict. “We agree that we support a world based on consistent rules. And we also support the elements of the UN Charter,” he said.

Both leaders agreed that reinforcing international law is key to achieving long-term peace and stability.

President Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s priority of strengthening and sustaining its partnership with Germany, while also calling for Germany to play a more active role in global affairs. “I firmly believe Germany must play a more active and important role because we need strong partnerships with Germany and with Europe,” he stated.

The bilateral meeting not only reinforced shared values but also aligned foreign policy perspectives, positioning Indonesia and Germany as partners committed to stability, cooperation, and global peace.

This development connects to broader themes such as Indonesia-Germany relations, the legacy of the Jakarta Declaration 2012, and the role of international law in global peace. ***
