Indonesian Madrasah Students Triumph at International Biology Olympiad in Bali

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s madrasah education system has once again proven its global competitiveness. Students from Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Insan Cendekia Ogan Komering Ilir (MAN IC OKI) captured an impressive 15 medals at the International Applied Biology Olympiad (IABO) 2026, held in Bali from June 12–14.

Competing against hundreds of participants from countries including Malaysia, Armenia, Romania, Thailand, Vietnam, and Russia, the MAN IC OKI team secured 4 gold, 4 silver, and 7 bronze medals. The achievement underscores the ability of madrasah institutions to nurture talent capable of excelling on the world stage.

South Sumatra’s Ministry of Religious Affairs Office head Syafitri Irwan praised the accomplishment, calling it proof that madrasah schools can compete internationally.

“This success shows madrasah are not only strong nationally but also competitive globally. It should inspire all schools to strengthen their culture of achievement,” he said, as quoted on the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs official website.

Behind the medals was a long process of preparation. Biology Olympiad coach Umi Nadifah explained that the journey to the grand final involved rigorous selection and training. “Every student we sent home brought back a medal. This reflects the gradual, consistent process of learning and mentoring,” she noted.

MAN IC OKI principal Komariah Hawa credited discipline, intensive guidance, and teamwork for the results. “This is the fruit of collaboration and consistency. We hope it sparks confidence among other students that madrasah can succeed on the global stage,” she said.

IABO, a leading competition in applied biology, tests participants’ analytical skills, problem-solving, and scientific understanding in an international context.

The strong showing by MAN IC OKI reinforces its reputation as a madrasah committed to research, innovation, and international competition, while elevating Indonesia’s profile in global science. ***
