Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo Praises Citizens, Urges Compliance with Japanese Laws

RRI.CO.ID, Tokyo - Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, has expressed appreciation for the positive contributions made by Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Japan while reminding them of the importance of complying with Japanese laws and social norms. In an official statement issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and received in Jakarta on Sunday,June 14, 2026, Kartini said that the presence of Indonesians in Japan, most of whom are workers, has made positive contributions to both Indonesia and Japan.
“The positive performance demonstrated in workplaces, campuses, and various promotional activities has been highly effective in building a favorable image of Indonesia in Japan,” Kartini said.
According to her, the forum was organized to help Indonesians living in Japan better understand the importance of adhering to all laws and social norms in the country. She noted that differences in culture, customs, and language comprehension have become common concerns in the social dynamics involving Indonesians in Japan.
“Two countries with different characteristics and cultures represent a valuable asset for strengthening people-to-people relations between Indonesia and Japan,” she said.
In addition, Kartini affirmed that the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has a responsibility to provide a forum for sharing information, exchanging ideas, and strengthening collaboration between the Indonesian and Japanese communities. She also encouraged Indonesians in Japan to continue respecting local cultures and traditions, just as they respect those in their homeland.
Among those attending the event were Director-General for Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Shingo Miyamoto, Executive Vice President of the Japan Foundation Masaya Shimoyama, and representatives from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the Osaki Police.
Shingo Miyamoto, welcomed the Indonesian Embassy’s initiative in organizing the dialogue. According to him, the event would help Indonesians gain a better understanding of Japanese laws and social norms.
He also stressed that more intensive dialogue between the Indonesian and Japanese communities is necessary to promote mutual understanding amid the cultural differences between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Nishizawa of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department highlighted the importance of mutual cultural understanding between Indonesians and Japanese. He said that many social issues arising within society are generally caused by misunderstandings between people.
Nishizawa also encouraged the Indonesian community to participate more actively in various social activities within Japanese society.
