RRI.CO.ID, Mexico City -The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Mexico has officially inaugurated a permanent Indonesian Cultural Center in Mexico City. The establishment aims to capitalize on the local population's deep appreciation for heritage and arts to broaden Indonesia's cultural footprint in Latin America.

The gallery space operates under a human-centric diplomatic framework designed to drive community engagement beyond traditional trade and political channels.

“The establishment of this Indonesian Cultural Center is part of a program I developed, namely People Center Relation, which emphasizes human interaction,” Indonesian Ambassador to Mexico, who also oversees Belize, El Salvador, and Guatemala, Toferry Primanda Soetikno, said on Friday, June 12, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Ambassador Toferry noted that Mexican society possesses a distinct affinity for museum exhibits and historical preservation, making the local population highly receptive to international cultural showcases.

The initiative breathed new life into an underutilized asset within the embassy complex. Authorities repurposed Casa de la Cultura, a versatile multi-purpose hall that historically sat vacant for extended stretches.

Concurrently, the embassy transformed its vast repository of regional Indonesian art pieces, which were previously only brought out for isolated, brief events, into a permanent, cohesive gallery installation.

Following an interior overhaul, the museum had its soft opening on May 23, 2026, coinciding with the embassy's annual Indonesia Festival. The debut drew a large immediate turnout, with over 500 visitors exploring the exhibits on opening day alone.

Moving forward, the Indonesian Cultural Center is open to the general public on an appointment-only basis. Curated tours begin with an educational briefing led by embassy staff, followed by an immersive multimedia presentation highlighting the diverse traditions of the Indonesian archipelago, before guests are guided through the main exhibition galleries.

Despite its recent launch, the center has already drawn structured tour groups consisting of local primary and secondary school children, university students, fine artists, and high-profile government figures.

“The Indonesian Cultural Center has garnered significant attention from the parliament here in Mexico,” Toferry added, noting that local lawmakers highly praised the setup.

Members of the Mexican Parliament hailed the permanent museum as a creative diplomatic innovation for an embassy in Mexico City, suggesting it could serve as an operational blueprint for other foreign diplomatic missions.

The center houses a diverse collection of at least 100 authenticated artworks and historical artifacts sourced from Sabang to Merauke. Looking ahead, the embassy plans to continuously expand its permanent collection and upgrade visual layouts, positioning the facility as a key vanguard for Indonesian cultural diplomacy across the Americas. ***
