RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are moving to significantly expand their bilateral tourism partnership, charting a mutual roadmap to broaden visitor flows, diversify travel experiences, and elevate human resource capabilities in hospitality.

The diplomatic breakthrough was finalized during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 126th UN Tourism Executive Council Session on June 11, 2026, in Toledo, Spain.

“Saudi Arabia is one of Indonesia's main partners in the Middle East, and Indonesia is ready to further deepen this partnership, particularly in tourism, in a spirit of mutual respect and benefit," Indonesian Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said in an official release confirmed in Jakarta on Saturday, June 13, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

According to a joint press release, the ministers reviewed the operational milestones achieved under their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) while drafting concrete measures to accelerate two-way travel volumes between the two nations.

A central pillar of the expanded dialogue focused on enriching the itineraries of millions of Indonesian religious pilgrims. The delegations explored strategic frameworks to seamlessly integrate leisure and cultural tourism into conventional pilgrimage trips, introducing Indonesian Hajj and Umrah travelers to a wider array of Saudi Arabian destinations and heritage sites located well outside the traditional borders of Mecca and Medina.

Concurrently, Saudi Arabia’s Tourism Minister, Ahmed Al Khateeb, emphasized that the deep-rooted cultural and spiritual ties between the two countries form an ideal foundation for modern commercial and economic growth.

"We are now working closely with our Indonesian partners to enrich that relationship, expand tourism exchanges, enhance visitor journeys, and create opportunities for our destinations, businesses, and communities," Al Khateeb added.

To actively prepare for a projected surge in high-spending Middle Eastern travelers, Indonesia has put forward a targeted infrastructure proposal: the establishment of a specialized Arabic Language and Hospitality Center at the Lombok Tourism Polytechnic (Politeknik Pariwisata Lombok) in West Nusa Tenggara.

This educational initiative is designed to rapidly upgrade the language proficiency and specialized cultural competency of Indonesia’s frontline hospitality workforce. By embedding customized Middle Eastern service standards directly into regional tourism curricula, the ministry aims to maximize satisfaction and service precision for incoming Arab tourists, securing Indonesia's position as a premier, globally competitive destination for international travelers. ***
