RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta — Indonesia has once again earned the trust of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to participate in a capacity-building program for the circular economy in developing countries through the Standards for Sustainability (S4S) initiative. Head of the National Standardization Agency (BSN), Donny Purnomo, stated that Indonesia is one of only four countries selected for the program, alongside Nepal, Vietnam, and Mongolia.
"Indonesia has once again been selected as one of four countries to participate in the S4S program, along with Nepal, Vietnam, and Mongolia," Donny said during his opening remarks at the webinar "National Awareness on the Implementation of SNI ISO 59000 Series," hosted online by BSN on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
The program, which runs from 2025 to 2026, is part of the ISO Action Plan for Developing Countries and is backed by funding from the German Government through the PTB (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt). The ISO S4S (Standards for Sustainability) program is an initiative designed to strengthen the capacity of developing nations in implementing sustainability standards, with a primary focus on facilitating industrial transition toward a circular economy.
According to him, the program utilizes a "Training of Trainers" approach to build a national pool of experts capable of supporting the implementation of circular economy standards in Indonesia. Through this initiative, Indonesian participants receive direct training from international experts, mentorship for implementing standards in pilot organizations, and assistance in developing circular economy-based business case studies.
Project Manager of the ISO S4S Program, Angelica Grisuk, stated that Indonesia has completed most stages of the program and is now entering the final phase, which involves disseminating results and raising public awareness. She explained that the initiative equips national standards bodies with the specialized skills needed to promote these standards and strengthen their role in achieving the UN SDGs at a national level.
“It uses a training of trainers approach to build local expertise and help organizations and enterprises implement ISO Circular Economy Standards at the country level. It also equips national standards body with the skills needed to promote the standards and their role in advancing the UN SDGs among national stakeholders,” Grisuk said.
She further expressed her appreciation to BSN, national participants, pilot organizations, and the international experts involved in executing the program. Indonesia's participation in this initiative is seen as a major step forward in strengthening the country's position in developing and implementing circular economy standards across the Asian region.
