RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo is handling a tragic case in Chitose, Hokkaido, where an Indonesian migrant worker identified as SR was fatally stabbed on Thursday, June 4, 2026.
The alleged perpetrator, also an Indonesian worker with the initials MALA, has been arrested and is now in police custody.
According to Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, the victim initially received medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
“Based on information from the Embassy, the victim was taken to a local hospital but was later declared dead,” Heni said in a written statement to RRI on Monday, June 8.
The incident also left a Japanese police officer and another Indonesian national injured. Chitose police are continuing their investigation to establish the full chronology and motive behind the attack.
Preliminary findings suggest the stabbing may have stemmed from personal relationship issues, though authorities stress that the case remains under investigation.
The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has been coordinating closely with Chitose police and relevant parties to manage the victim’s remains. The embassy has also contacted the victim’s family in Indonesia to deliver the news and discuss arrangements for repatriation.
“We have communicated with the family to convey this sad news and to plan the repatriation of the body,” Heni confirmed.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its Directorate for the Protection of Citizens and the embassy in Tokyo, pledged to continue monitoring the case to ensure the victim’s rights and those of his family are upheld, including the repatriation process and legal assistance throughout the investigation.
