Indonesia and Malaysia Explore Various Cooperation

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Malaysia discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation during the 17th Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC). The meeting took place at the Pancasila Building of Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, June 4, 2026.
The forum was co-chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Hasan. Discussions covered economic development, trade, energy security, food security, and border management issues.
Both sides also reviewed defense cooperation, environmental matters, disaster management, and citizen protection. The meeting followed up outcomes from the 13th Annual Consultation held in Jakarta last year.

Following the talks, Sugiono highlighted stronger coordination between both countries. He said broader cooperation remains important for addressing shared interests and regional challenges.
He also appreciated efforts made by officials from both countries. The following is part of his statement after the meeting.
"We agreed to continue strengthening coordination in order to enhance broader cooperation across various sectors. We also appreciate the hard work carried out by the teams from Malaysia and Indonesia in addressing various issues of common interest," he said.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Hasan, said the meeting produced agreements supporting stronger bilateral relations. He noted that Indonesia and Malaysia already enjoy a close and longstanding partnership.
The following is part of Mohamad Hasan's statement after the meeting. He emphasized the positive outcomes achieved through the 17th JCBC discussions.
"Overall, our discussions today at the 17th JCBC reached agreements that provide opportunities to further elevate the already established relationship between Malaysia and Indonesia," Hasan said.
The meeting placed particular emphasis on trade, investment, energy cooperation, and food security. Discussions also addressed cross-border supply chains amid ongoing global economic challenges.
Outcomes of the 17th JCBC are expected to support future bilateral engagements. They will also help prepare discussions for the 14th Annual Consultation in Malaysia later this year.
