RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The African country of Madagascar has reiterated its intention to open an embassy in Indonesia. It was stated by Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 3, 2026, while receiving Madagascar's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alice N'Diaye.
"I also mentioned a warm welcome to Madagascar's interest in establishing a diplomatic mission in Jakarta in the future," Sugiono said in a joint statement. Madagascar does not have any full diplomatic embassies in Southeast Asian countries. Therefore, Sugiono hoped the embassy opening could be a gateway into more Malagasy engagement with the region.
"We believe that such a presence would further strengthen our bilateral relations and facilitate Madagascar's engagement with the region, with ASEAN, as well as with the broader ASEAN-Pacific markets," he said.

On the occasion, N'Diaye did not give any statement on the embassy opening. However, she commends the past 50 years of diplomatic friendship between Indonesia and Madagascar, reflecting the strong ties that unite the two nations.
"Indonesia's experience and diplomatic support represent a valuable asset in enhancing Madagascar's visibility within major international economic dynamics and in facilitating the development of new strategic partnerships," N'Diaye said.
Madagascar previously announced the future embassy in Indonesia in 2017 by its Minister of Communication and Relations with Institutions, Harry Laurent Rahajason, at the 10th Bali Democracy Forum. According to Indonesian media reports, Rahajason had planned to open the Malagasy embassy in 2018, but it did not come to fruition.
