RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The United Nations (UN) has called for the importance of security guaranties as well as sustainable political and financial support for world peacekeeping forces. UN Secretary General, António Guterres made this call during the commemoration of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, observed every May 29.
Guterres said that more than 50,000 UN peacekeeping personnel are currently deployed in various conflict areas around the world to protect civilians, support the distribution of humanitarian aid, oversee elections, and help create space for political solutions.
“Right now, more than 50,000 UN peacekeepers are deployed across the globe protecting civilian lives. In some of the world’s most dangerous settings, they de-escalate tensions, oversee aid delivery, support elections and create space for political solutions to grow,” António Guterres said in an official UN statement, Thursday, May 28, 2026.
He also highlighted the high risks faced by peacekeeping forces in various conflict areas. Since 1948, nearly 4,500 UN peacekeeping personnel have been reported killed while on duty, including 59 personnel last year.
According to him, attacks on peacekeeping forces are a serious violation of international humanitarian law, and member states have an obligation to ensure the safety of all UN personnel.
"In an era of rising tensions, peacekeeping is a proven and cost-effective way to restore stability and hope. This year’s theme, Investing in Peace, calls for decisive action to ensure peacekeepers have the resources to carry out their vital mandates," he said.
Indonesia continues to demonstrate its commitment to world peace missions thru the deployment of the Garuda Contingent in various UN peacekeeping operations since 1957. In May 2026, Indonesia once again deployed 744 TNI personnel to join the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission in Lebanon.
Indonesia is also recorded as one of the largest contributors of UN peacekeeping personnel and consistently supports international peace efforts under the United Nations mandate.
