RRI.CO.ID, Tokyo - The Minangkabau Family Association (IKM) Japan hosted an Indonesian cultural festival in Tokyo under the theme “Rang Minang Baralek Gadang.” Supported by the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, the event aimed to introduce Minangkabau heritage to Japanese audiences.
Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, praised the initiative and encouraged Indonesian citizens to actively promote national culture abroad.
“This event carries great significance, not only as a gathering for Indonesians, but also as an effort to showcase Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage to the Japanese public,” she said in a press release on Monday, May 26, 2026.
Ambassador Kartini highlighted the relevance of Minangkabau philosophy for the Indonesian diaspora, particularly the importance of respecting local customs, traditions, and values.
“Indonesians must remain sensitive to local norms, respect cultural practices, and contribute positively to Japanese society,” she noted. She emphasized that Indonesian associations in Japan should serve as platforms for unity and productive collaboration among the diaspora.
“The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo stands ready to support initiatives that strengthen community ties and promote Indonesian culture, while also deepening Indonesia-Japan friendship,” she added.
IKM Japan Chairman Hari Koto described the festival as a strategic opportunity to highlight the cultural richness of West Sumatra.
“The event is a way to introduce Minangkabau culture and charm, especially to Japanese society,” he said.
The festival featured traditional Minangkabau performances such as Randai, Tari Pasambahan, and the ceremonial Baralek Gadang wedding procession.
Visitors also enjoyed Minangkabau cuisine, which drew enthusiastic responses, along with displays of traditional textiles like songket and batik that reinforced the festival’s vibrant Nusantara atmosphere in Tokyo. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
