RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, along with the foreign ministers of 17 other countries, condemned a move by the Somali region of Somaliland to open an embassy for Israel in Jerusalem. All other countries are from the Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Bangladesh, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Mauritania, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Türkiye, and Yemen.
"The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia... condemn in the strongest terms the illegal and unacceptable step taken by the so-called “Somaliland” region in opening a purported “embassy” in occupied Jerusalem," Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on social media on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
The ministers said the move constituted a "flagrant violation of international law and relevant international resolutions". They saw the move as "a direct infringement on the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem".
They reaffirm their "categorical rejection" of any unilateral measures aimed at entrenching Jerusalem's current realities, whose status has been disputed since Israel captured its eastern portion in 1967, incorporated it with the western part, and claimed the whole as its capital. They also reject any acts conferring legitimacy on any entities or arrangements that contravene international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
"They reiterate that East Jerusalem has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967, and that any measures intended to alter its legal and historical status are null and void and without legal effect," the statement goes.
Somaliland is a state within Somalia that experienced separatist conflicts with Somalia during the late 20th century. In 1991, they established a self-declared country that remained unrecognized by any other country until Israel recognized it in 2025.
"The Ministers further emphasize their full support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and their unequivocal rejection of any unilateral measures that undermine the unity of Somali territory or infringe upon its sovereignty," it stated.
