RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta — Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, is scheduled to make a working visit to New York, United States, to attend the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate. Spokesperson Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yvonne Mewengkang, said the meeting will discuss strengthening the international system based on the UN Charter.

She stated that the agenda will be chaired directly by the Foreign Minister of China in its capacity as President of the United Nations Security Council for May 2026.

“The Foreign Minister will conduct a working visit to New York to attend the United Nations Security Council Open Debate themed ‘Upholding the Purpose and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN Standard International System,’” Yvonne said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

Yvonne also said that António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, is also scheduled to attend and deliver a briefing at the meeting.

In addition, she explained that the forum is being held amid growing geopolitical rivalries, prolonged conflicts, and the selective application of international law, which are seen as eroding trust in the global order and the effectiveness of multilateralism.

“For that reason, it is considered important for the Indonesian Foreign Minister to attend the Open Debate presided over by China and to be led directly by the Chinese Foreign Minister,” she said.

Yvonne added that the Indonesian Foreign Minister has confirmed his attendance to participate in the UNSC Open Debate scheduled for May 26, 2026. She also revealed that after attending the meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono is expected to hold bilateral meetings with various partner countries.
