RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Consulate General in San Francisco confirmed that no Indonesian citizens were among the victims following a deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD), California, on Monday, May 18, 2026, as U.S. investigators examine possible hate crime motives behind the attack.
In a written statement issued on Tuesday, May 19, Information and Socio-Cultural consul Afina Burhanuddin said the consulate continues to communicate with the Indonesian Muslim community to ensure their safety following the incident.
She said the shooting occurred at around 11:40 a.m. local time, or 1:40 p.m. Jakarta time, on Tuesday and left five people dead, including a security officer and two suspects aged 17 and 19.
According to Afina, the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, and local authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the case. “The San Diego Police Department suspects the attack may be linked to hate crimes targeting Muslim community,” she said, as quoted by Antara.
The case has drawn attention from both the U.S. federal government and state authorities. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said the three civilians killed in the incident were men. He said the police are coordinating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in handling the case.
According to Wahl, investigators are examining the possibility of a hate crime because the incident took place at a major Islamic activity center.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump described the shooting as “a terrible situation". He said federal and state officials are continuing to investigate the case and gather additional information. “What happened is a terrible situation. I have received initial briefings, and we will continue to monitor it closely,” Trump said, as quoted by Anadolu.
The Islamic Center of San Diego is the largest Muslim worship and community center in San Diego, located about 15 kilometers from the city center. ***
