RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Advocates Movement Council (DePA-RI) and The Law Society of Singapore (LSS) reinforced cross-border cooperation through an official meeting and discussions focused on professional development, international corporate cases, and legal collaboration between the two countries.
DePA-RI Chairman TM Luthfi Yazid said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday, May 18, 2026, that the visit by the Singaporean legal delegation marked an important step toward expanding legal cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore, particularly amid increasing investment and business activity across borders.
According to Luthfi, cooperation between legal organizations is necessary to strengthen legal harmonization, improve the capacity of legal professionals, and provide legal protection for business actors in both countries.
He expressed hope that relations between DePA-RI and The Law Society of Singapore would continue to grow sustainably and benefit both nations.
“Although I could not personally shake hands with Tan Cheng Han or my old friend Lisa Sam, I believe this meeting will be productive and become the beginning of a collaborative partnership built on mutual respect and benefits for both legal organizations and the two friendly countries, Indonesia and Singapore,” Luthfi said in his remarks delivered virtually from Makkah, as quoted by Antara.
The visit by the Singaporean legal delegation followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two organizations on August 15, 2025, in Singapore.
The Singapore delegation was led by Tan Cheng Han along with lawyers from various Singapore-based law firms.
During the meeting, Tan Cheng Han emphasized the importance of strengthening legal cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore, particularly in addressing investment challenges, cross-border corporate disputes, and the enforcement of the rule of law.
“Legal cooperation between these two friendly countries is essential to creating mutually beneficial harmonization,” he said.
He noted that Singapore’s growing investment in Indonesia requires strong legal certainty and protection. Likewise, Indonesian businesses investing in Singapore also need optimal legal safeguards. “The rule of law must truly be upheld,” he added.
He also expressed openness to expanding collaboration with DePA-RI in areas including legal professionalism, legal expertise development, cross-jurisdiction corporate case handling, as well as academic and research cooperation.
The meeting also discussed the implementation of Indonesian new Criminal Code (KUHP) and Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP), including issues related to corporate crime, money laundering, corruption, and transnational crime.
Luthfi Yazid said there are still many strategic programs that can be jointly developed by DePA-RI and The Law Society of Singapore to strengthen regional legal cooperation in the future.***
