RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has called on BRICS to step up as a driving force for peace and stability, with Foreign Minister Sugiono urging the bloc to embrace its responsibility as a rising power of the Global South.
Speaking at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, India, on May 14, 2026, Minister Sugiono emphasized the group’s growing influence in shaping the future of global governance.
“As a rising power in the Global South, BRICS has the position and responsibility to play a more active role in safeguarding peace and preserving the rules that underpin global stability,” Minister Sugiono said in a statement released in Jakarta on Friday, May 15, as quoted by Antara.
He stressed that BRICS’ greatest value lies in amplifying the voice of developing nations. Minister Sugiono reminded members to uphold international law fairly and consistently, without double standards, noting that no country is above the law.
During the meeting, Minister Sugiono also raised Indonesia’s concern over the deaths of four of its peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL in Lebanon, calling for full accountability. He underlined that the safety of UN peacekeepers must remain non-negotiable.
Beyond security, Minister Sugiono highlighted the need for reform in global governance, including changes to the world trade system to ensure it is inclusive, open, and non-discriminatory, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) as its foundation.
In line with India’s chairmanship theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” Indonesia welcomed the strengthening of the New Development Bank (NDB) and confirmed it is finalizing internal processes to join.
This year’s BRICS gathering marks Indonesia’s second year as a member, coinciding with the bloc’s 20th anniversary since its establishment in 2006. Looking ahead, Indonesia aims to leverage BRICS to expand collaboration in strategic sectors such as economy, climate change, energy, health, and global governance reform.
Membership in BRICS offers Indonesia significant opportunities, as the bloc represents 28–30 percent of global GDP and 45 percent of the world’s population. The Foreign Ministers’ Meeting serves as a key forum leading up to the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12–13, 2026, in New Delhi. ***
